When containerized or trailerload
cargo changes mode of transportation, the transfer can be a tricky operation. Many of
these containers measure 40 feet or more long and contain finished goods that may be
fragile.
 Not only must the material handling equipment be precise, strong and gentle, so
too the method of control. This is best achieved with Berlet Electronics equipment, which
can spot track machines, direct huge gantry cranes into place, and inform operators when
loads have been secured.
RADIO CONTROLS ENHANCE PRODUCTIVITY AT
STATE-OF-THE-ART INTERMODAL FACILITY
A new Intermodal facility located on
28 acres utilizes Series 8-K radio remote control plus Series 12-K telemetry to direct
three 40-ton gantry cranes for handling trailers, containers and non-containerized
shipments such as steel coils and palletized loads.
The cranes are 69 feet tall with a 75-foot bridge span. In any other facility they
would each have to be manned by as many as three persons, one of whom would have to climb
to an overhead control cab. At this terminal, each crane is operated by one person from a
safe position on the ground using the Series 8-K and time multiple sharing.
Series 8-K controls such functions as trolley, hoist, spreader bars, trailer
clamps, motor throttle and steering. The 12-K system indicates when the spreader bars are
positively locked onto the load. By standing at or near the load, the operator has safer
vision of the operation and can more accurately position the load. A 60-car train can be
loaded and reloaded in 3-1/2 hours by just one operator on each crane.
